The Extramural Students Society is an organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting the needs of Massey’s distance students.
EXMSS is your society. It is here to support your success – however, to be able to best serve you, we need you on our membership books.
The more members we have, the stronger our case for maintaining an increasing our funding, and the more support we are able to render to you.
We are currently running a ‘Membership Special’ – for the next few months, we are offering full membership packages at just $1, instead of the usual $10 for students or $15 for associates.
So why wait? It will take you less than 2 minutes, and you’ll be free to get back to your studies!

Representation and Advocacy
As a member of EXMSS you will have access to advocacy that engages at the highest levels of Massey University. If your issue is taking too long to resolve, or has not had the outcome you feel you deserve, EXMSS is ready to champion your cause.
EXMSS is also striving to improve courses that fail to satisfy students. If you are disappointed with a paper you have taken, let EXMSS know so that we can take steps to improve the experience of the paper for all distance students.
The EXMSS President also speaks up against legislation that reduces opportunities for part time and distance study. EXMSS believes the current Ministry of Education focus on full time youth students is flawed. Political pressure to change this negative tack, through strategic partners (such as the New Zealand Union of Students Associations) and media discussion, is part of the EXMSS strategic plan. Your membership ensures the voice of distance students is heard in Government and at the highest levels of Massey University. The EXMSS President is on the Massey University Academic Board and has regular meetings with the University and Campus Registrars, and the Massey University V.C.
EXMSS supports opportunities for all students including Maori and Pasifika students. EXMSS has a Maori Representative on the executive and is affiliated with Te Mana Akonga (TMA), the national union for Maori students.
EXMSS has an established Facebook presence on several pages, including the offical EXMSS group and the Massey University Extramural Community page. If this is your preferred method of keeping in touch then members will find links to all the topical issues here. Increase your connections and options of support by taking part in the continual cycle of Facebook discussions.
EXMSS is also in the process of establishing a blog that will include helpful information for navigating your way around extramural study at Massey University, and provide you with tips and tricks to make your distance experience more enjoyable.
