As you are aware the Student Services Fee increases 100% for 2010 ($31 to $60). We discussed the rise with Massey and we felt they had good reasons for doing this: improved services was the focus. We then asked what the services were going to be, how many students will they reach and will the students be told?
We then offered our views, based on students feedback, and negotiated for a few things that were missing from Massey’s planned ‘new’ services. Free phone to lecturers for extramurals, an improved hardship grant that has more flexibility to tackle financial barriers such as textbooks and travel costs, the ability to have your returned assignments independently reviewed and of course we supported the Massey initiatives which include more support for those who are struggling and more regional seminars. Massey have been great with their engagement with the student associations, professional attitudes coupled with a common interest in students success has resulted in tangible benefits for students. The final suite of services will be confirmed early in 2010.

The EXMSS office is extremenly busy. We are working away, delivering on the strategic plan (which you can find on our website) and presuming that our membership is appreciating and using our services. [...]

I have been very busy, engaging with the University on issues of delivery, equity and support for students. The office is thrashing, our four staff are crazy-busy with promoting contact course services, producing the magazine, keeping the website relevant and dealing with increasing numbers of hardship fund applications. We are working away, delivering on the strategic plan (which you can find on our website) and presuming that our membership is appreciating and using our services.

Presuming is a word that worries me. If we do not get any negative comments then is it right to presume we are delivering on our members expectations?I can safely say that the work I am doing is having a positive impact on the way extramural students are perceived by Massey. But this is difficult to prove. I have been posting comments around my activity and members with an interest are welcome to engage with me on any issue.

The staff have also been assisting students, but on a more individual level. Advocacy cases have been resolved, financial hardship cases assisted, scholarships delivered, travel needs met and social and study events supported. Our graduation dinner and art exhibition have been recorded and are available for all to view.

In the field our EARs have facilitated class groups and been there at regional orientation meetings to offer support and deliver Academic Writing Guides to our members. We have begun to deliver services across the country with the shuttle service now operating 365 days in four centers and a Help Desk in Albany now operating during contact course periods.

Our communications have been regular and of high quality using traditional print based media and the web. The EXMSS executive have been reviewing and making changes to the constitution to ensure it is relevant to our members needs. Governance and management have been working well together to deliver on an agreed strategic plan. EXMSS is operating with all the financial safeties on and within budget

Is this okay? Is this worth $40.00 per year?

Please let me know what you think so I don’t have to presume your satisfaction.
