Getting Your Anime Fix in Palmy

So in the previous post we talked about Buying/Reading Manga in Palmy now in this post the focus is on Buying/Renting anime in Palmerston North. Thus here is with a comprehensive list of sites in Palmy where you can go get your Anime fix.

Buying Anime

The only really stop to buy anime dvds at the moment the Gamesman on 373 Church Street (just opposite the Plaza) they have a relatively good range of anime dvds available for you to purchase – plus you can also order it in from the Gamesman – however in my experience they do not contact you when they have got it (not by TXT at least) so you might have to checkin every so often to see if the order you made has come through.

With the new Plaza we there will possible new outlet for Anime lovers to get there goods – namely HB HiFi, Coming soon in the new Plaza in May. HB HiFi in Wellington has a large selection of anime DVDs to buy however time will tell if this store will come up with the same goods. Also Heroes for Sale and the Warehouse (Corner of Cook and Main St)have a small anime DVD range which you can buy.

For secondhand anime DVDs there is Cash Converters – 551 Main St (just past the Bus stop) with a small stock of anime DVDs available.

Anime movies (particularly Studio Gibili) can usually be brought at all places that sell DVDs i.e. Marbecks, Whitcoulls, K-Mart.

Renting Anime

For renting anime here is a list on where you the video rentals in Palmerston North, a list of Anime Series they had available went I went there (so there could possibly be more), plus a overall rating out of ten for their collection of anime.

Also note I do not mention anime movie (well once) that is because most rentals are likely to have Anime Movies than series – in particular Studio Ghibli (most of which are available in the Massey Library for free). So I have left the movies out as the list would get too long. Milson Video has no anime movies at all. Bold means that the anime series can be rented only in that place.  The colour in brackets mean where it is on the map:

Public Library – The Square

Palmy's Central Library

As the same for reading manga the best place to rent out anime DVDs is the public library – found in the Sound & Vision Zone, Ground Floor (opposite the basement) the cost is $3 for each DVD for a week which is pretty good. They have anime section by the WII, here is a list of their stock:

Fafner, Bleach, Eureka 7,Arjuna, Full Metal Alchemist, Azumanga Daioh, Egro Proxy, Beck, Gilgamesh, Gantz, Gankutsou, Ghost in the Shell: SAC season 1, Great Teacher Onizuka, Gungrave, Guyver, Gundam SEED, One Piece, Mushi-shi, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Haibane Renmei, Naruto, Otogi Zoshi, Paranoia Agent, Please Teacher, Yu Gi Oh!, Rurouni Kenshin, Eureka 7, Tenjho Tenge, Speed Grapher, Samurai Champloo, Yu Yu Hakusho and a bit of Dragonball. –over 30 series

Palmy Library has the largest and most variety anime DVDs available to rent out in palmy – check it out sometime or look at their catalogue

Rating 9/10

Civic Video (Pioneer) 760 Pioneer Hwy (Purple on Map)

The next stop for you anime fix – has an anime section consisting of the following:

InuYasha, Wolf’s Rain, Fist of the North Star, Yukikaze, Ghost in the Shell: SAC season 1, Full Metal Alchemist, Initial D, Gunslinger Girl

- quite a lot of anime which you cannot rent anywhere else in Palmy

Rating 7/10

United Video 93-97 Grey St (Green on Map)

Anime section at the back contains:

Final Fantasy Unlimited, Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, Berserk, Afro Samurai, Last Exile, Soul Taker.

A good selection of anime, but also of note is a wide variety of anime movies.

Rating 6/10

Video Concepts Midway Plaza 95 Albert St (Light Blue on Map)

Video Concepts has slightly more variety than United Video but from what I could see it look like they had brought just the first DVD of everything, though then again there were a few following DVDs. No anime section also anime found in Cult section

Berserk, Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist, Street Angel Kurumi, Please Teacher, Cowboy Bebop, Final fantasy Unlimited, Ninja Scroll.

Rating 6/10

Blockbuster Video  cnr Fitzherbert Ave & Ferguson St (Yellow on Map)

No anime section but has the following anime:

Dragonball Z, & Dragonball GT – found in the children’s section

Bubblegum crisis 2040 – Found in the TV section

Not much anime at all but Bubblegum Crisis 2040 is only found here and that a pretty cool anime

Rating 2/10

Civic Video (Albert) Cnr Albert & Main Sts (Dark Blue on map)

Does Zoids Fuzors count?- it’s made in Japan by aired in the US first (found in the children’s section)

Rating 1/10

Video Ezy (227 Featherston St (Pink on Map)) & Milson Video (73 Milson Line)

No Anime section…. No anime at all

Rating 0/10

So that’s all the places where you can buy/rent anime at the moment. A lot of video rentals have closed down recently: Video Ezy (Church St), Video Concepts (Tremaine St), Video Hub, and The Portal. Some are still in the Yellow Pages so don’t bother looking for them.

Getting your Manga Fix in Palmy

For new people here in Palmy it may be hard to know where you can buy or read manga so here is a comprehensive list of sites in Palmy were you can go get your Manga fix:

Buying Manga

The main place to buy manga here in Palmy is Heroes for Sale the local comics/manga/games store on 35 King St (Behind where Farmers used to be). It has a great range of Manga available in stock, plus if they don’t have it available you can usual order it in – though I have found that some stock you can not order from them (though I forget what)

If you can’t order it from Heroes you can likely order it from Bruce McKenzies on 37 George street (next to the audio/visual part of Central Palmy Library) The also have a small range of Manga available. Whitcoulls in Downtown on 38-42 Broadway Ave also has a small range of manga available (by the graphic novels)

For second hand Manga there is Trash and Treasures -156 Rangitikei St which has several pre-owned manga available

Reading Manga

The best place to read is Palmy Central library they have an impressive selection of Manga most of it found in the Basement – on the ground floor There you can find shonen series like like D-Grayman, Gintama as well as staples like Naruto and One Piece. Shojo titles like NANA and Love Com. Plus Magazines like Shonen Jump and Yen Plus. There is a lot of manga there.

For More “Adult” Manga you will need to travel up to the First Floor to the graphic novels section (by the fiction desk), there you will find two trays of manga available these include Blame!, Buddha, Eden, and just recently Pluto Urasawa X Tezuka (unfortunately only the first two volumes at the moment)

Finally if you can read Japanese then there is a third place where you can read in the Library as the library has in it’s Community Languages place (also on the First Floor – by the stairs) manga in Japanese like Yotsubato and Kekkashi

If you also can read Japanese the Bean Café – 16 Broadway Ave also has a lot of Japanese manga for you to read while you are drinking your bubble tea

So that’s it for getting your Manga fix in Palmy if you know of any other good place for reading/buying Manga in Palmy comment below.
