Maintaining a reasonably consistent energy level means you are more able to study and concentrate more effectively and handle the stresses of heavy study loads. This seminar presents the basics of food and mood, with dietary suggestions to get you started and keep you going.

It was fantastic to see distance students graduating in Auckland. Seeing their nervously ecstatic faces cross the stage encourages me to keep focused on my own study. EXMSS will be supporting the Palmerston North graduations too. I will be one of the lucky ones on stage watching each student get capped, but EXMSS also has an evening celebration that marks graduations for distance students in a very special way.

The EXMSS Graduation Dinner will be on the 17th of May, tickets cost $45 and that provides a complimentary glass of bubbles and a three course meal. But the highlights of the evening are often said to be the guest speaker (this year it is lecturer Richard Shaw) and the graduate’s stories.

After dinner graduates are given the opportunity to say a few words about their journey and this gives people like the Massey support staff, VC and Chancellor a direct insight into what it is like to study by distance at Massey. Such a celebration is a meaningful finish to a student’s journey. Photos’ of the graduates, both individual and as a group with the Chancellor and VC are complimentary and round off the experience, described as the ‘best ever’ Massey event for distance students.

Booking for the EXMSS Graduation Dinner can be made through Therese@exmss.org.nz

With cost, success rate, and jobs for graduates, being the priorities of National’s Tertiary Education Strategy it is difficult to see how making it harder for youth students to survive financially will help. What our Tertiary strategy needs is a re-think about its youth priority. There needs to be more focus on adult students, who are predominantly part time, cost less to educate (they have an 80% lower loan uptake compared to youth), have been shown to be more engaged in their study, and are often studying towards a known work role. Yes they take longer to complete, but they don’t change their minds about their career choice, or disappear overseas on graduation. Many Maori students study as adults, especially at degree level. These students, also a priority of the Strategy, are struggling to get into institutions with their mandatory youth focus, so the Strategy appears to be confounding its own mission, “to allow Maori to study as Maori”.

Minister Joyce, face up to what New Zealand and students both want and need: a balanced Tertiary Strategy that provides equal opportunities no matter age or race, and supports students to succeed.

Media Release – Loan and Allowance Tinkering Will Not Achieve Tertiary Goals

The supervisor-supervisee relationship is pivotal to the successful completion of a Masters degree and Doctorate. This relationship can potentially be one of the most rewarding academic partnerships. Conversely, for some students, this relationship can be fraught with difficulties, which can be very stressful for both parties. This seminar is presented by Doctoral and Masters supervisors who will discuss some of the common supervisor-supervisee relationship issues, and offer suggestions as to how to enhance this important relationship.
