Student associations around the country are calling for the Government to seek a rational solution to the impossible requirement to change to voluntary organisations next year. Students will not have information about student association services and fees when they enroll on October 1st because of the late passage of the VSM Bill. Dave Crampton, Vice President of EXMSS has written about the difficulty (NZ Herald article) and you can find summarised below.

Students Call for a Reasoned Approach

Students are becoming frustrated after the National Party decided to actively support legislation that will impose voluntary membership of students’ associations, and front another bill that will allow the Tertiary Education Minister to control the mix of student-funded services provided by tertiary institutions.

In the face of majority opposition, rather than finding a pragmatic solution to membership of students’ associations, National is supporting ACT MP Heather Roy’s member’s bill to force voluntary membership of students’ associations next year.

Tertiary institutions could choose to increase the student services levy and pass funding onto students’ associations (or a non-student led service provider) or simply lose the services. Students will have no control over services that make the cut, even though they will remain compulsorily student-funded.

A further bill will give the Tertiary Education Minister authority to dictate what mix of services tertiary institutions may provide. It is ironic that students are shut out of political decisions on services they are forced to fund and that directly affect them.

Students’ associations are calling on National to extend the transition period of the bill on voluntary student membership past the implementation date of 1 January 2012 – and to make legislative provision for meaningful student representation and student-led advocacy.

Just Zilch aims to work alongside other organisations in Palmerston North to ensure that surplus food is being accessed and redistributed appropriately. Just Zilch strives fill a gap in the community where surplus goods are not already being redeemed and where people are unable to access current social services. They have, and are looking to increase, a team of volunteers who collect food and help to ensure our store runs smoothly.
