What is EXMSS?
It is the student body which represents the 16,000-plus long-distance learners who study through Massey. EXMSS stands for the Massey University Extramural Students’ Society.
Independent
EXMSS is not part of Massey University. Although it is based on the campus and knows the university intimately, EXMSS is a totally independent body. Set up over 40 years ago, it is funded soley by the $40 student union fee.
Student affiliation
EXMSS is affiliated to the national student body, the New Zealand University Students’ Association (NZUSA). However, it has a different character than the other student associations. Extramurals tend to be older than on-campus students; they are scattered all over New Zealand, and overseas; they often study alone; they are often in jobs; and there are over 16,000 of them. So EXMSS is a unique student organisation.
It is:
- an independent representative and lobbyist for extramural students;
- an advocate for students having problems with Massey;
- a communication link between students and the university.
